DISCERNING A CALL TO MINISTRY

Many who visit Saint Michael’s Seminary are exploring an important question: Is God calling me to serve the Church as a priest or deacon? Discerning a call to ordained ministry is a process of prayer, reflection, and guidance from the Church.

What is a Calling?

A calling to ministry is not merely a personal desire. It is a recognition that God may be inviting someone to serve His people through ordained leadership within the Church.

“This calling is typically recognized through active participation in
the sacramental life and the gentle movement of the Holy Spirit in
one’s soul.”

A growing desire to serve

A persistent inner pull toward service and ministry within the Church body.

Affirmation from leadership

The external confirmation by spiritual leaders and the local parish community.

Deepening spiritual commitment

A visible growth in prayer life and adherence to the Church’s spiritual disciplines.

A willingness to shepherd

A heartfelt readiness to care for, lead, and guide others in their faith journey.

The Role of the Church

In the Charismatic Episcopal Church of North America, the discernment of a call to ministry is not done alone. Local pastors, bishops, and seminary leaders all play a role in helping individuals prayerfully consider whether they are called to ordained ministry.

Prayerful Discernment

If you are considering a call to priesthood or the diaconate, we encourage you to:

Pray Regularly

Seek quietude and listen for the voice of God in daily prayer and scripture.

Speak with Clergy

Consult your parish priest or bishop who knows your walk and heart for service.

Seek Mentors

Identify spiritual mentors who can provide objective and wise counsel.

Study Scripture

Immerse yourself in the Word and the history of the Church’s ordained life.
