OVERVIEW

Saint Michael’s Seminary offers courses designed to form priests and deacons in Scripture, theology, sacramental life, and Spirit-empowered ministry. Courses are accessible regardless of location and structured to integrate with work, parish ministry, and family life.

 
Saint Michael’s Seminary forms a new “Cohort” of students each year, who will together navigate the three year, twelve course Program of Instruction.  Each term consists of two courses, which are taught by live Video Instruction, currently Zoom, both courses taught the same Saturday.

CURRICULUM SAINT MICHAEL’S SEMINARY

OVERVIEW

Each course at Saint Michael’s Seminary includes assigned readings designed to support theological depth, spiritual formation, and pastoral wisdom.

Church History Curriculum

Course Objectives:
1. The student should be able to articulate the significant points of agreement and divergence between Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Anglicanism, and to explain the historical and theological reasons for those divergences.
2. The student should be able to defend the position of the Charismatic Episcopal Church as being a true part of the Church Catholic.
3. The student should be able to explain how the CEC embodies the ideals of the Reformation in its Faith and Practice without sacrificing its Catholicity.

Practical Application for Parish Ministry:
1. The student will be able to deal with parishioners’ and visitors’ questions and reservations about the Faith and Practice of the CEC with a sensitive understanding of the Faith Traditions from which the questioners may be proceeding.
2. The student will be equipped to minister out of the fullness of the Catholic Tradition.

Week 1—introduce the textbook (listed above) and its varied theological Views—encourage students to choose an area where they are least Informed e.g. orthodoxy or Roman Catholicism and to do a ccomprehensive paper for their final project for this course.

Week 2—lecture on the roman catholic church its dogma’s and doctrines. We will cover the great schism of 1054 A.D. and explain the Theological divide that still exists today between the Roman Catholic And the Eastern Orthodox churches.

Week 3—lecture on eastern orthodoxy and its distinctions from Protestants and the roman catholic church. A discussion about the Canonical books and their acceptance in both communions.

Week 4—the pre-reformers and the reformation will be discussed. The 95 Theses of Martin Luther will be read together stressing its opposition to the roman catholic church including its apparent abuses in Theological thought and practice.  We will examine protestant doctrine including its emphasis on Scripture alone and justification alone—especially examining the Concepts of law and grace. There will be some emphasis on the second Great Awakening reviewing the works of Jonathan Edwards and the Evangelistic campaigns of Billy Graham
